Man faces charges in fight at campsite
Mark E. Warren was camping with friends near the river in Lower Turkeyfoot Township when he was attacked by Thomas Edward Mitchell, of Somerset, state police said.
Both Warren and Mitchell were drinking when they got into a fight, police said. Mitchell hit Warren in the face with the barrel of a rifle, knocking him to the ground, police reported.
Mitchell, according to the police report, "repeatedly struck the victim in the head with the rifle butt until Warren became unconscious."
According to police, Warren regained consciousness and was able to drive himself to a nearby residence, where help was summoned. Warren was taken by emergency helicopter to Conemaugh Medical Center in Johnstown, where he was treated for various injuries. A spokeswoman for the hospital said Warren was released Saturday morning.
Mitchell was charged by state police with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.
