Occupation: Senior writer/producer Marc USA

Education: Bachelor's degree in English, University of California, Berkeley, 1963; master's degree in fine arts, photography and visual studies, California College of Arts & Crafts, 1972.

Background: Authored the novel, "There's Something in the Backyard," published in 1989 by Viking Press; his photographs have been featured in a number of exhibits on the West Coast, where he lived for 17 years; has experimented with expanding on his 1977 photo project on life in the mill towns of the Beaver Valley.

Noteworthy: Eighty of those Beaver Valley photographs are being featured in a photo exhibit, "Afterimage: Mill Life Remembered." The exhibit is on display through June 30 at the Senator John Heinz Regional History Center in the Strip District.

Quote: "This is more about the life we had back then when the mills were prospering, than it is about the mills. This work heritage/ethic we have came from that. There was great pride that (work in the mills) was really bad, but that we were tough enough to do it. ...The people, in their hearts, their souls, are made of steel. It was a tough life. I'm not nostalgic for it, but I realize it for something that makes us special."
