As a Marine mission commander called Sarge, a glowering Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson leads his Rapid Response Tactical Squad to a Mars research station, along with second-in-command John Grimm (Karl Urban), in "Doom."

They must "neutralize a threat" that turns out to be a weekly written and poorly photographed and edited rehash of the plots of "Alien" and "The Thing." The creature is a genetic mutation with which they play cat-and-mouse in the ugly metallic corridors of a dark, wet set.

The height of human interest is that John's estranged sister Samantha (Rosamund Pike) is the forensic archaeologist in residence.

Spewing sci-fi mumbo-jumbo, the dozen ostensibly human characters navigate "Doom" with all the depth and dramatic power of a video game come to life. Which is what it is.

    In wide release.
