Sen. Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, has won his fight to preserve funding for a $230 million bridge that will serve 50 people on an island already well served by ferry service. Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., reminded that a Learjet or hundreds of speedboats could be bought for each islander for the same money. But to no avail. A measure to redirect some of that pork to hurricane relief was soundly defeated. Such is the sad state of the U.S. Senate. ... Seattle newspaperman Bruce Ramsey is out with his latest compendium of the writing of Garet Garrett, one of the 20th century's most cogent anti-socialism essayists. The latest installment -- "Insatiable Government" -- should be a must-read for 21st-century lovers of liberty. ... Bill Clinton hatchet man Sidney Blumenthal writes in London's Guardian newspaper that "President Bush is the most conservative president in modern times." Perhaps to a wild-eyed liberal such as yourself, Sid, but certainly not to conservatives. ... In the same commentary, Mr. Blumenthal likens conservatism to communism and conservatives to Trotskyites. Does The Guardian actually pay people to write such drivel? ... An interesting statistic from Timothy Potts of Democracy Rising PA: "On July 7, 79 member of the House voted against the pay raise. But ... when House Bill 1945 (the repeal bill) was introduced, 34 of those 'no' votes were 'no-shows' when it came time to co-sponsor the repeal."
