An 'intervention program'

Janine Pacelli identifies the new monthly program, "Underage Curriculum for Adolescent Needs," as a prevention program. If these children, not "kids," have been referred by magistrates, school officials, etc., it should be called an "intervention program."

These children already have been identified as having unfortunately dabbled in drugs and alcohol. Wouldn't a prevention program be education to all children, not just elementary school children? Would it benefit the Connellsville Area School District also? Why does this program need to be based on referrals only?

It seems to me that the world is based on intervention, not prevention. It's always after the fact that we realize something is wrong and then we try to fix it.

I believe that Janine Pacelli's program is wonderful; the five evening classes seem to be well organized and thought through. I would like to hear more about the future gains and results from the second small-group program that concluded recently.

It seems that once children are placed into programs unwillingly, they are more apt not to comply. We are the people responsible. Unfortunately, we as adults sometimes get distracted -- second jobs, divorce, illnesses, deaths.

But it is our obligation to raise these children with the best love and knowledge that we have to offer them.
