A glimpse at 'Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant'

The phenomenon known as "Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant" will return to Mt. Pleasant with an on-demand footage fest next week.

"I have a feeling there will be a real strong crowd coming in," said Roger Marsh, the writer and director of "Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant," which was filmed on location in Mt. Pleasant for two weeks in early June.

Since then, Marsh, who resides in Chicago, has received phone calls from everywhere -- from Greensburg to Pittsburgh -- with the most frequently asked question: When will the film be released?

Marsh said the film will be released in June 2008, but he's still working on finding a local venue to show the movie on the big screen.

However, for those eager for a Mars-attacks fix, Marsh said there will be a 31-minute behind-the-scenes presentation of "The Making of Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant" on Sundayat the Kosciuszko Club, 201 N. Depot St., Mt. Pleasant.

While Marsh said the featurette isn't the actual movie, the mini-movie will be comprised of footage taken from the crew's hand-held camera that was rolling behind the scenes, filming such things as actors getting into place, Marsh positioning extras for the two big outdoor scenes, and some interior shooting that many of the 250-plus extras didn't see. Even footage from scenes from the movie itself, shot from the primary camera, will be thrown into the mix.

"There's a lot of fun footage," Marsh said.

Bethany Kerns, who played the role of Dottie in "Mars Attacks Mt. Pleasant," will be master of ceremonies for the event. Marsh said a limited number of commemorative DVDs of the behind-the-scenes featurette will be on sale for $5 each.

Show times for the behind-the-scenes featurette are 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $5 each as a donation to the Philip Haddad campaign for Scottdale Borough Council. Advance tickets can be purchased on-line at www.phil4council.com
