A Washington County tax collector has announced her intention to oppose a veteran state representative in the Democratic primary on April 22.

Barbara Reis, 55, who is a part-time tax collector in North Charleroi and Charleroi office manager for Dr. George Toohey, says she will oppose longtime 49th District state Rep. Peter Daley.

"I have lived in the Mon Valley for 34 years and know what our communities need from our public servants. As the wife of a union steelworker, I have personally watched the economic struggles of families in southwestern Pennsylvania, the attempts of the elderly to attain services, the need for working families to obtain affordable health care, and the hope we all have for quality, efficient roads to our region's economic hub, Pittsburgh," Reis said.

Reis is the mother of two children and a grandmother. Her husband, William, is a steelworker at Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel in Allenport.

In addition to her part-time tax collector post, she has performed community service at Monongahela Valley Hospital, Toys for Tots and the Mon Valley Food Bank.

Daley, 57, of California, has served in the state legislature since 1983.

The district covers portions of Washington and Fayette counties including North Charleroi, California, Charleroi, Fallowfield Township, Roscoe, Speers and Monongahela in Washington County, and Brownsville in Fayette.
