Montour Trail Council continues work on path
A three-mile section of the popular trail along the old railroad line in Mt. Pleasant, Cecil and Robinson townships in Washington County is close to completion.
Volunteer trail council members are seeking Peters Township's permission for an easement to develop sections of the trail around Peters' Arrowhead Trail. And the council is hoping to begin work soon on a two-mile section between Clairton and the Large section of Jefferson Hills.
"Things are happening on multiple fronts," said Peter Kohnke, president of the Brigeville-based council.
So far, about 27 miles of the Montour Trail are open to walkers, runners, bicyclists and in-line skaters. The trail follows the old Montour Railroad line from Robinson Township, Allegheny County, to Clairton, and eventually is to connect with trails through West Virginia and Maryland that will lead to Washington, D.C.
In Peters, the trail council needs the township's permission for a 30-year easement, in order to connect the Montour Trail with the 3.7-mile Arrowhead Trail. In this area, the extensions will run a total of about 7.5 miles in three directions — west into Cecil Township, north to Bethel Park and east into Bethel Park and South Park Township.
The work would cost more than $1 million and could be complete in about three years. The trail council has applied for two grants for about $900,000.
