Council seeks space for tennis courts

Peters Township council members are looking for more space for residents to play tennis.

Since the new library was built and the old library converted into police and parks department offices, land was taken that was originally used for tennis courts. Since the library opened in April 2000 and the police station opened four months later, Councilwoman Jackie Campbell believes it's time for the township to get on the ball.

"I really think we need to build a tennis court as soon as possible, because we promised to replace the two courts that were taken out by the library construction," she said.

This year, the township has allotted $8,000 in the budget for an outdoor practice wall on property between the township complex and McMurray Elementary School on East McMurray Road. Township Manager Mike Silvestri said that a court and a practice wall could be built on the land, and there was an outside chance that two tennis courts could be built.

If both courts were built, however, they wouldn't be oriented to face away from the sun, and some players would have to squint.

Councilman Mike Neville suggested contacting the township Tennis Association for feedback. Neville reminded council that they have been approached by the school district for cost sharing for the resurfacing and improvements of the high school courts. He said this would alleviate the need for a major expenditure in the short term.

"There is no long-term plan for tennis courts," Councilwoman Jean Mosites said.

Council president Robert Atkison said the township is still planning to make good on its commitment to replace the tennis courts.

" We recognized we made a commitment when we tore (out) the tennis courts and the practice wall down for a parking lot," he said. "We are still in a mode to do that."
