    The basics

    FOUNDED:1894

ORIGIN:The Talligewi Indians were the earliest to settle in the region, although the Delaware conquered them and the Iroquois Nation at one point claimed all of western Pennsylvania. Chartiers and Mansfield boroughs were incorporated on Nov. 6, 1872, as related but semi-autonomous units. They consolidated in 1894 when voters in both boroughs voted 670-125 to form a single entity. Industrialist Andrew Carnegie consented to having the town named in his honor, and in return he gave $200,000 to build a library and music hall. Additional endowments followed this gift. The Andrew Carnegie Free Library opened on May 1, 1901. By 1916, Carnegie had three railroad lines and 14 metal industries.
