FOUNDED: Jefferson Township, founded 1828; incorporated as Jefferson Borough, 1950; renamed Jefferson Hills, 1998.
ORIGIN: Prior to 1780, the land of present day Jefferson Hills was claimed by Virginia. It was not until the adoption of the Mason-Dixon Line that the land became a permanent part of Pennsylvania. The County of Yohogania, created by Virginia in 1776 in what now is southwest Pennsylvania, was dissolved in 1781. In November 1794, the former Yohogania County Courthouse served as quarters for officers under Gen. Daniel Morgan's command during The Whiskey Insurrection, an uprising by local farmers over an excise tax on whiskey. The area became part of Washington County in 1781 and Allegheny County in 1788. Jefferson Township, named in honor of the third president and author of the Declaration of Independence, was incorporated Jan. 22, 1828, from parts of Mifflin and St. Clair Township and included in its borders the present-day communities of Pleasant Hills, West Elizabeth, Clairton and parts of Baldwin and South Park. The township incorporated as a borough in 1950. A referendum on Nov. 3, 1998, changed the name to Jefferson Hills.
