Grapplers fare well in competition

Casey Leonard of Combative Grappling Systems did not have high expectations when he took four of his students to the second annual TATU Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition.

Leonard was stunned when his Greensburg-based school won the academy team trophy.

"It was the first time competing for most of the guys," Leonard said. "I didn't really know just how well they'd do. So, yeah, I was real suprised."

Dustin Thornton, of Trafford, won the 130-148 pound weight class, and also took first in the 155-below Absolute (155-below) division.

Brad Hoyle, of Luxor, placed first at 148-160, and also won the 155-up Absolute division.

At 160-175, Dennis Razza, of Derry, was first and Jason Thornton, of Hunker, took second.

All four students competed at the white belt level in the tournament, which was held July 27 in Scranton.

Leonard won the blue belt division and the Absolute class. The opponent he beat in the semifinals was promoted to purple belt, which means Leonard also soon will be promoted a level.

"A couple of the schools (at the tournament) are taught by Brazilian black belts, so it definitely gave my guys a confidence boost in our training," Leonard said.

A week later, Leonard's crew competed at the Battle at the Beach 3 event in Wildwood, N.J. There were 536 competitors, making it the largest North American Grappling Association-sponsored tournament in the country.

Thornton placed second in the 150-below division. Razza took fourth at 160-175.

Combative Grappling will compete Sept. 21 at the U.S. Grappling Association Competition in Ewing, N.J., and the NAGA U.S. Nationals Nov. 23-24 in Bayonne, N.J.

Golf tournament

The foursome of Bob Flockovich, Dave Powell, Jim Hood and Dick Morrow won this year's Frick Hospital Golf Classic, held at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Connellsville.

The scramble event, sponsored by the Frick Hospital Foundation, attracted about 100 golfers. The day began with a shotgun start and concluded with a dinner and recognition program.

Finishing in second place was the threesome of Efren Leonida, Efren Leonida Jr. and Bill Kennan. The third place team was comprised of Dean Owery, John Plavan, Larry Roberts and Ron Hill.

Country club pro Matt Gotto presented prizes to the winning teams.

The event raised about $35,000 for the foundation, which will use the money on various hospital projects.
