Sophomore guard B.J. Monteiro has been reinstated to the Duquesne University men's basketball team by coach Ron Everhart after larceny charges stemming from an incident earlier this month in his home state of Connecticut were dropped.
Monteiro's attorney, William L. Stevens, notified Everhart of the agreement on Tuesday.
"B.J.'s case is finally concluded," Stevens wrote in a fax to the coach, "and he continues to have a clean criminal record."
Since his arrest, Monteiro, 19, of Middletown, Conn., has been attending classes at Duquesne and is expected to be ready for the official start of preseason practices on Friday at Palumbo Center.
No one was saying exactly why the charges were nullified. Everhart had suspended Monteiro on Oct. 6 following his and the arrests of two others, including a juvenile, three days earlier.
All three were cited for third-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit third-degree larceny in connection with the theft of a laptop computer, iPod and cash at a house party on Aug. 7 in Torrington, Conn.
The total value of the items and currency was set at $1,400.
"The court proceedings have concluded and B.J. Monteiro will be reinstated to the men's basketball team," Everhart said.
The 6-foot-5 Monteiro, a former Connecticut high school player of the year in 2007-08 at Crosby High School, came on in the second of last season, when, as a freshman at Duquesne, he averaged 3.3 points in 30 games, including five starts.
Monteiro is the all-time leading scorer at Crosby.
