Jeannette's Terrelle Pryor was as shocked as anyone Friday when USA Today named him the top junior football prospect in the country.

"It surprised me, but I thought I had a good season," said Pryor, a two-sport standout said. "I just have to do what I can to stay on top."

Pryor had a breakout junior season, passing and rushing for more than 1,700 yards each and leading the Jayhawks to their first WPIAL Class AA football title since 1983.

In that 24-14 victory against Greensburg Central Catholic, he completed 10-of-14 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown and also ran 18 times for 184 yards and another score to pace an offensive attack that amassed 406 total yards.

Jeannette parlayed that victory into the school's first appearance in the PIAA Class AA championship game.

In that game, Pryor carried 18 times for a game-high 165 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 93 yards and another score in a 29-28 loss to Wilson Area of Easton.

Pryor also is considered one of the best basketball prospects in the country and plans to play both sports in college.

Heading into last night's win over Freeport in a key Section 1-AA matchup, Pryor was averaging 19.8 points per game and 9.5 rebounds for the No. 2 in Class AA in the Tribune-Review rankings.

Among the many schools interested in the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Pryor are Pitt, Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. He committed to play at Pitt, but he has since reopened his search and is entertaining other offers.

"I just think it's a good thing, and it's a good accomplishment, I guess," Pryor said. "I just have to stay on top of things, keep working hard at the football camps and prove them right."
