HERSHEY — North Allegheny had several tents set up Saturday, allowing the black-and-gold school to stand out among hundreds of others at the PIAA cross country championships.

"It's like a big encampment," North Allegheny first-year coach John Neff said.

North Allegheny also stood out in the Class AAA races.

The boys team finished second and the girls fourth, and junior Ryan Gil took third on the 3.1-mile Parkview course.

"We would've been happy with 10th," Neff said of the boys team, which won the WPIAL title. "We finished third the past two years, so that was kind of on the (boys') minds. Not much was expected of us at the start of the year."

Mt. Lebanon senior Rad Gunzenhauser (15:49) was second in the Class AAA race, finishing 2 seconds behind North Penn's Brad Miles.

Last week at the WPIAL Class AAA finals, Gunzenhauser was runner-up to Gil, who ran a 16:03 yesterday.

North Hills' Joe Kush was fifth (16:10), and the Indians finished eighth overall.

"We have trained on a lot of hills to help simulate this course," Gil said. "We were third last year, so we wanted to get medals this year."

Quaker Valley's boys had to settle for silver again. Quaker Valley posted 99 points — a week after scoring 41 to win the WPIAL title — and finished runner-up to York Suburban.

A WPIAL Class AA team hasn't won a PIAA team title since Neshannock in 1976.

Quaker Valley senior runners Omar Hyjek, John Yankello and sophomore Nat Fox were bunched up at 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively. Senior Mike Ryan, battling a calf injury, placed 80th for the Quakers.

"I guess one of these years I will figure this thing out," Quaker Valley coach Dave Noyes said. "Obviously, we felt confident coming in. We just didn't finish as well as we wanted."

Last year, the Quakers finished two points behind Elk Lake.

North Hills' girls hadn't been to the PIAA championships since the mid-1980s, so the experience was new to this year's group. It also will be memorable.

Led by a pair of top-15 finishers, North Hills placed ninth out of 24 teams.

Indians sophomore Margo Malone was the WPIAL's highest finisher, placing fifth in 19:01.

Hampton's Elaina Balouris was sixth (19:04), and Hempfield Area's Amber Valimont was seventh (19:08).

"I wanted to go out and run my best race," Malone said. "The course was tough; there are a lot of hills."

North Hills also got an 11th-place finish from freshman Shannon Malone (19:28).

WPIAL champion Evan Miller, a senior from Laurel, placed seventh in Class AA.

Norwin's girls, plagued by the flu, took sixth in the Class AAA team standings.

Norwin junior Jenna Gigliotti, the WPIAL champion and a fifth-place PIAA finisher last fall, fell to 67th as she battled illness.

The top district finisher in the girls Class AA race was Shady Side Academy senior Katrina Jueng, who took eighth in 19:41.

Officials may need a "Deer Crossing" sign at next year's event. During the Class AA girls race, a deer ran across the track and bumped a runner from St. Basil Academy before trotting into the woods.
