Monessen native helps author medical journal used as teaching tool
A Monessen native helped pen a new medical reference book.
Dr. Rosalie Elenitsas, served as associated editor of "Lever's Histopathology of the Skin," which was released Sept. 1 by the Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins publishing company.
In its 10th edition, the book has been used by generations of dermatopathologists, pathologists, and dermatologists in their respective fields and as teaching aides.
This is her fourth book publication.
Elenitsas is an associate professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Her clinical specialties are pigmented lesions/melanoma and dermatopathology.
Her research areas of interest are studying melanoma and noncancerous skin growths, such as moles. Melanoma is a highly malignant type of skin cancer that usually begins in a mole.
Elenitsas is a Monessen High School graduate. She also graduated in 1981 from Washington and Jefferson College with a chemistry degree.
In 1985, she earned her medical doctorate from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
She is married to John K. Gilliland and they have two 6-year-old daughters. The family lives in Philadelphia.
She is the daughter of Mary Elenitsas, of Monessen, and the late Nicholas G. Elenitsas.
In addition to her research, Elenitsas has a busy schedule that includes seeing patients, managing a research lab, performing surgeries and lecturing at medical conferences around the country.
Her mother described Elenitsas as a hard-working physician whose day begins at 6 a.m. and doesn't end until 7 p.m. She is also a devoted wife and mother to her daughters.
