This has been a memorable off-season for Donora's Mark Gorscak, the Pittsburgh Steelers' 14-year scout.

Three weeks ago he made his second trip to the White House with the Super Bowl champs.

"I couldn't believe all the Steeler fans who were there to greet us when we got off our charter plane and in the White House," he said. ""We got a fireman's salute with the fire chief, a Pittsburgh guy, hosing the plane on our arrival. It was really cool."

Gorscak was also impressed with President Barack Obama.

"Everyone knows he's a Chicago Bears' fan first, but he said the Steelers were also a favorite," he added. "We really got a great reception.'

Two nights ago, Gorscak was at Heinz Field's East Club Lounge for the Steelers' Super Bowl ring ceremony. It's his second Super Bowl ring and there's not much of a comparison to the first from 2006.

"This one is 1 1/2 times bigger," he said. "It will be tough wearing it because it's so big."

Besides the two Super Bowl rings, Gorscak also has a 1995 AFC championship ring from when the Steelers beat Indianapolis before losing to Dallas in Super Bowl XXX.

"It was a replica of the Oakland Raiders' first Super Bowl ring," he said.

Despite having three impressive rings, Gorscak doesn't show them off. '"I only wear one at a time," he smiled.

Speaking of the Steelers, free agent and California University quarterback Kevin McCabe will go to the Steerlers' training camp in Latrobe next month wearing No. 8.

It may not be a good omen since only one Steeler has had that number over the past 69 years. Tommy Maddox, also a quarterback, wore that number from 2001 to 2005.

The odds of McCabe sticking with the Steelers aren't promising considering Ben Roethlisberger and Charlie Batch head the list followed by Dennis Dixon, a fifth round draft pick in 2008, and rookie Mike Reilly.

- Forget about Nick Montana following his famous father, Joe, to Notre Dame.

In somewhat of a surprise, the younger Montana -- who will be a senior at Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village, Calif. -- announced yesterday he will attend the University of Washington. Even though the Huskies went 0-12 in 2008, Montana was sold on new Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, who guided Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez as an assistant at Southern California.

Notre Dame, Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Georgia were interested in Montana, who threw for more than 2,500 yards in leading his team to a 14-0 record in 2008. He is rated the 13th best quarterback prospect in the country by one scouting service.

Montana's decision came a week after Jake Heaps, one of Washington's top schoolboy QB prospects, spurned the Huskies by committing to Brigham Young. Montana will be going against Heaps Sept. 18 when Oaks Christian visits Skyline.

- And thanks to Guy Kruppa, of Rostraver Township, who says a lot of people look for employment -- very few look for work!
