In a way, Angelo Galante has been delivering the day's news for most of his life.

Galante, now 54, started delivering The Daily Independent back in 1962.

He was around 11 years old, if memory serves him right, and eager to put a few bucks in his pocket.

He lived with his family on McKee Avenue in Monessen, where his parents, August and Joanne Galante, still live today.

That's where he got his first taste of earning a few dollars by having an after-school job.

Galante started out with 85 papers on his route, which spanned the area from McKee Avenue all the way up to Ninth Street. Through his years as a paperboy, Galante recalls walking through more than three feet of snow and all sorts of weather to get the paper delivered.

He continued to deliver the paper until he was about 16. By that time, his route had grown to 102 customers.

"It was a great experience to have. I met a lot of wonderful people that I still see today," said Galante.

These days, he's helping the daily delivery of another sort: the U.S. mail.

Galante has worked as a mail handler at a postal facility in Pittsburgh's North Side for the past 33 years.

He will retire at the end of this year.

When he's not working, he's busy with his family, including wife Carol. They have two children, Ken, 26, and Matthew, 20. He also has a stepdaughter, Kathleen Fedarko.

The Galantes also have three grandchildren, Zachery, 9, Hayden, 2, and newborn Hayley Marie.
